Choosing a Domain and Host

Choosing a Domain name:

A domain is a web site’s URL. The domain is the most visible part of your online identity. It’s what you put on your business cards, in your advertisements, and email. It’s how people remember where you are on the web, so an easily remembered URL is as important nowadays as an easily remembered name.

Although you can use a URL offered by free web space providers (such as www.geocities.com/xerexes/coganth.html), most businesses and many individuals buy their own domain name to make it easy for people to find them on the web. If your online presence is www.myname.com, people can remember and find your site more quickly and easily. A domain name is generally a worthwhile investment.

Many web site builders and designers wait until the web site is built and ready to launch on the web before purchasing a domain name. We disagree with that approach. We suggest that purchasing a domain name should be one of the first steps that you do. The reasons that we suggest purchasing a domain name first, is because the name you have in mind might already be taken. Another reason is that you can design your web site theme to go along with the domain name. For example, if your domain name contains global, world or universal, you might consider using a world globe or map image in your web site design. With a good imagination, you could have a great theme that your visitors will associate with your domain name.

You should consider the following questions when deciding on a domain name:

1. Can I pronounce the name easily?

2. Will people know how to spell it just by hearing it?

3. Is the name easy to remember?

4. Does it have something to do with the content of my web space, or the product or service I’m providing?

Choosing a Registrar:

When you go to register your domain name, you’ll need to find a registration company, also called a registrar, to register with. Purchasing a domain name is a commitment. Once you purchase your domain, you own it. You will be required to renew your domain every one year.

If you don’t have a web space provider or domain name yet, hold off on registering your domain name. Most web hosting companies offer reasonable domain name registration as part of their services.
