Things to know about Building a Web Site

Building and designing a web site can be fun and exciting, but it can also be difficult. Because RAC Services focuses on helping the beginner to intermediate web site builder, we are going to explain how to build a web site in a some what easy way. Why not just easy? Honestly, there is no “easy” solution for building a web site, unless of course, you pay a web site designer to build and launch your site for you.

At this point, you should have already read our “Starting a Web site” section. You should know exactly what type of web site that you want and it’s purpose. If you haven’t already, we suggest that you choose your web host and register your domain name at this time. The reason for choosing your web host now, is going to make the building and design of your web site much easier.

What You Need to Build a Web site

1. Domain Name

The domain name creates the address of your site. An example of a domain name would be “yoursite.com”
Domain names are paid for yearly and sometimes are included in the web host plan.
Please read our “Choosing a Domain” page for more information.

Do you want a FREE site?
We would never endorse free web hosts. They are too unstable, you never really own your site and you do not receive a true domain name. Instead your address will look similar to this http://yourname.theirdomain.com. The other problem with free web hosts is that in order to afford to offer you a web site at no charge is that they flood your web page with advertisements. You are limited on the number of pages and you often to not get a your name@yourdomain.com email address.

2. Web Host

A web host is the company that houses your files and provides the environment for you to create and save pages to the Internet.
Web hosts are usually paid for monthly, quarterly or annually.
Important! Before you select a web host, make sure they support the kind of script and functionality you want to use. Please read our “Choosing a Web Host” page for more information.

3. Web site Building Software

Some web hosts provide web site building tools so you do not need any additional software. If you are a beginner and are thinking about using a template, it’s important you find out about this before you sign up with any host.
CoffeeCup & Dreamweaver are popular web editing software programs that people use to create and maintain their sites.
Our favorite web building software is offered by Serif. We recommend their software to both beginners and experienced web site designers. You get the most features and flexibility with Serif WebPlus software. (See our Building Software page for more information)
